Yoga – For The Stress

yogaFrom the time I was in Junior High I searched for a way to exercise that would be beneficial to my body first and foremost. However I wanted to enjoy myself as well. Truthfully I struggled with weight from about grade 5 until this very day. If I don’t exercise and eat a well balanced diet I will gain weight fast.

My quest for the right type of exercise for my body began with taping a 7am aerobics class on TV and doing the class in my parents’ basement over and over again. I realized it was getting boring and I felt a little trapped being inside. I began to run outside during the warmer months yet still felt as though something was missing. A new gym opened in my area and it was very popular so I figured why not go there. I did a variety of exercises at the gym. I tried every cardio machine and played around with some weights.

I found that I did trim down but by the time I was in University I had reached my plateau. The greatest challenge I kept facing was that I never truly looked forward to going to the gym. I awaited the end of my workout every time and if I didn’t have a friend to go with me I could talk myself out of going. In my mid twenties I decided that I needed to hire a personal trainer. At first having a personal trainer was fun. I had someone catering to my specific needs and I always had someone to workout with. The only problem was I actually started to feel worse about my body. I gain muscle quickly and I was bulking up in areas I didn’t want to. I also did not look forward to the monthly cellulite checks.

So what was next on my quest?

My cousin suggested joining a running program with her. I made her promise to not miss out on any classes because I needed her to motivate me to go. Again it was fun at first to try something new, however I never enjoyed running all those years ago and I realized soon that I didn’t enjoy it today either. I felt amazing once our runs were complete but during the entire run I would wait for the class to end.

So… I went back to the gym.

This brings my journey to last year. I was preparing for my upcoming wedding and quite frankly I was very stressed out. It was approaching fast and I anticipated all the things that could go wrong. Due to many things, stress being one of them, one morning I woke up with a sore back. As the morning progressed my back kept tightening. By the time I arrived at work I couldn’t breathe. My boss took me to the hospital where I was told I put my back out. I began going for physiotherapy and was told to not do any type of
exercise for a few weeks. I began to get antsy and feel as though I needed exercise to balance me especially in the months prior to my wedding. My physiotherapist suggested that I take up yoga as it might help my back. I had heard about hot yoga and I decided to give it a shot. When I first went to Moksha Yoga I was nervous.

I filled out all these forms, I told the instructor about my back and she was very understanding and helpful. The first class I attended was a 90-minute Moksha Yoga and Nena was my teacher. When the class ended I felt as though this whole new world had opened up to me. I loved it! As I went more and more I kept feeling better and better about myself and more importantly my back pain disappeared! As the wedding neared people started asking me how I could be so calm. They said I seemed more relaxed than ever. I just kept saying that at this point in the game, I’ve done what I can do and whatever else happens is out of my
control so I’m just going to enjoy the ride.

Yoga has done so much for me that it is impossible to keep my story to one paragraph! I haven’t even gotten to the best part yet!

The weekend of my wedding arrived. I felt ready, I felt excited, and I was mentally and physically in an amazing place (in fact I’d lost weight from yoga and my dress was a tad big – but still looked amazing!). I swear yoga saved my wedding day! The morning began with a wonderful latté and all my bridal party at the salon getting their hair done.

The only problem was that my hairdresser wasn’t there. He forgot about me! His boss had to go to his house and wake him up! He was over an hour late and in the end did a great job. For some reason, I was completely calm throughout the morning not worried about what would happen if he didn’t show. I guess I figured one of the 4 other hairdressers in the salon could do my hair if they had to. Everyone at the salon
expected me to explode and couldn’t believe that I didn’t even break a sweat. That wasn’t even the worst of it! I was off to do pictures, which we did before the ceremony. My fiancée and I had a great time and loved just being silly during the shoot.

We saw a playground and thought how amazing it would be to get pictures of us all dressed up in the playground. I still can’t believe I pushed my fiancée down a slide in his tux, or that I climbed up a play structure in my dress! Well, what did I expect? I leaned up against the play structure and when I leaned back I noticed blue chalk all over my dress. I just stood there and kept breathing in and out. I looked up and saw my fiancée, the photographer and the videographer all looking at me waiting for me to literally detonate. I didn’t! I just said that we all needed to work together now to get it off my dress.

Long story short, 95% of the chalk came off and no one noticed the other 5% except for those that already knew it was there (and it’s not visible in the pictures or the video).

I swear yoga has made me more rational and calm. I’m able to put things in perspective and focus on the more important things in life. I have finally found a practice that has not only allowed me to reach my physical goals but has been an emotional and spiritual exercise for me as well. I look forward to my yoga practice, I love being in the classes and I feel amazing when I leave! What else could you ask for?

Twelve reasons for problem skin

skin Twelve reasons for problem skinAs a bride your beauty is not only about lotions and potions it’s about making healthy lifestyle choices.

  1. The Sun. Without protection from the sun’s rays, just a few minutes of exposure each day over the years can cause noticeable changes to the skin. Freckles, age spots, spider veins on the face, rough and leathery skin, fine wrinkles that disappear when stretched, loose skin, a blotchy complexion, thick wart-like, rough, reddish patches of skin, and skin cancer can all be traced to sun exposure.
  2. Smoking. Cigarette smoking causes biochemical changes in our bodies that accelerate aging. 10 years of smoking is statistically more likely to develop deeply wrinkled, leathery skin and an unhealthy yellowish hue to their complexion than a nonsmoker
  3. Lack of exercise: Living a sedentary life contributes to aging skin, because exercise helps to tone your muscles and get your blood flowing which is important to nourishing the skin.
  4. Weather: Cold winds and low temperatures contribute to aging skin by making skin dry. Extreme changes in temperature shock the skin just like going in and out of door in winter. Heaters and air conditioning can make the skin very dry
  5. Facial Expressions. Repetitive facial movements actually lead to fine lines and wrinkles. Each time we use a facial muscle, a groove forms beneath the surface of the skin, which is why we see lines form with each facial expression. As skin ages and loses its elasticity, the skin stops springing back to its line-free state, and these grooves become permanently etched on the face as fine lines and wrinkles.
  6. Gravity. Gravity constantly pulls on our bodies. Changes related to gravity become more pronounced as we age. In our 50s, when the skin’s elasticity declines dramatically, the effects of gravity become evident.
  7. Sleeping Positions. Resting your face on the pillow in the same way every night for years on end also leads to wrinkles. Called sleep lines, these wrinkles eventually become etched on the surface of the skin and no longer disappear when the head is not resting on the pillow. People who sleep on their backs do not develop these wrinkles since their skin does not lie crumpled against the pillow.
  8. Stress: Stress and worry cause frowning, and over time the muscles in the face actually conform to that movement. Be aware of your stress level and use relaxation techniques and do activities you enjoy this will help you look and feel younger.
  9. Lack of sleep: Too little sleep makes you look and feel tired with dark circles and bags under the eyes, and sagging skin. The average adult functions best with around 8 hours sleep each night and maintain a sleep routine that includes going to bed at the same time each night.
  10. Nutrition . To have a balanced diet eat healthy and follow your Canadian food guide, drink 8 glasses of water daily and support your diet with vitamins and minerals.
  11. Skin Care. When was the last time you had a professional facial care that included a deep cleansing, pore care and balancing of the skin. Having your monthly facial may slowdown the ageing process.
  12. Home Care. The soap and water days of your grandparents are over. Pollution, nutrition and lifestyle make it necessary to properly tend to your skin both day and night.

Glowing vibrant skin is determined by the health and lifestyle decisions you make every day. Talk to a certified skin care professional about what you can do to prevent you not looking your best for your special day.

Reflexology & The Stress Free Bride

Are you feeling a little grumpy before your wedding?

Do you know what stress actually does to your body…?

1. Stress increases your blood pressure which could compromise your kidney function;

2. In some cases, the human body responds to stress by shutting down the gastro-intestinal tract, preventing it from processing food and providing our body with the daily nutrition it needs to function properly;

3. Stress causes the liver to release an excess of glucose and fatty acids into the blood stream. The body is then forced to produce significant amounts of insulin to deal with the excess. Over time, this will cause unnecessary fluctuations in blood sugar levels, leading to hypoglycemia and diabetes in some cases. The extra glucose turns to fat since no muscular work was performed to burn it off. In addition, the fatty acids can clog your arteries when unused;

4. Stress exhausts your adrenal glands since they are responsible for producing the hormones which enable the body to deal with stress;

How can Reflexology help?

Picture Perfect U

adele 207x300 Picture Perfect U

I am 32 years old; I have struggled with my weight my entire life. I was chubby in elementary, which was cute, but not so cute going into high school. I was picked on a lot. I managed to keep my weight the same through my early teens. I’ve tried every fad diet there is. I’ve even starved myself.

I reached 300 pounds, the heaviest I had ever been, and that scared me. Something had to be done!! I have nieces and nephews that I want to see grow up. I want to run and play with them. I had seen the commercials for U Weight Loss Clinics but never really paid attention. I was scared to go and check it out. Then on May 27 I walked in the U Weight Loss Clinic and sat down. We discussed the program, where I wanted to be and how I was going to get there. They made me feel I could do it. I signed on right there.

I started my first week with a bang, I lost 11 pounds. I was hooked. It seemed so easy. I went in everyday that first week; I began to feel really comfortable. The girls were all so supportive, answered all my questions, made sure I was doing well. The meals are great and easy to make. They made it so easy, getting my menu plans ready and a shopping list, explaining everything that I was taking and how important it was. They made me feel comfortable just walking, even if I was having a bad week, I could talk about anything. If I am having a bad week and not losing the way I should, we look at the big picture to see what I can do to fix this. I don’t feel like I am doing it alone.

I have lost 40 pounds to date and I feel great. I am doing the CIBC Run for the Cure, something I never imagined myself doing. When I reach my weight goal in the spring I am planning on running the half Manitoba Marathon. I can see a future where I can look in the mirror and smile.

Cosmetic Tips for Your Wedding Day

makeup1 Cosmetic Tips for Your Wedding DayYour wedding day may still be weeks away, or even months from now, but it is never too early to learn some cosmetic tips to ensure you have long-lasting foundation, flawless skin, gorgeous eyes and very kissable lips, before and after your wedding and in your wedding album!

So what are the best cosmetic tips? What are the secrets that only professionals know? When it comes to applying foundation, good quality brushes are a must. Using brushes to apply foundation also saves on the amount of product required.

To make your foundation last, prepare your skin before applying your makeup by using a primer product. Once you have applied your makeup, set your face with a hydrating mist. This mist also gives your skin a soft, dewy appearance which will translate equally well over a candlelight dinner or in your wedding photos.

To help promote luxurious skin consider having a facial or mild glycolic peel done at a salon. You can also promote healthy and beautiful skin at home with a facial scrub that rejuvenates your skin to give it a healthy glow. Make sure you follow the facial with a moisturizing application. Well-moisturized skin will make your makeup last longer. If you don’t know what your skin needs are, ask a professional – it’s often hard to determine your skin type by yourself.

Eyes figure prominently in wedding photos so be careful when using shimmer shadows which are very much in style at the moment. These shadows pose a problem for brides. Wear only the finest of products as some heavier shimmer products won’t photograph well and also create added shine. Brides often use a concealer to banish dark circles under their eyes, but that can be problematic. If your makeup application is too thick, that area can look cakey. Solution – use a lighter toned foundation under the eyes to banish those darker circles.

Since you will be doing quite a bit of kissing at your wedding, try using a lip stain – it’s long-lasting and therefore a great choice for brides. For best results, apply with a lip brush, not your finger. Ironically, the less lip stain you apply, the longer it lasts. And don’t worry if your lips are thin, you can give your lips a fuller appearance by using a lip gloss that temporarily plumps up your lips to give you that kissable pout.

Bridal Hair, Do’s & Don’ts

bride hair Bridal Hair, Dos & DontsDo consult a hairstylist to assess what hairstyle would work best on your wedding day. You need to know your total look as your hairstyle, veil, and jewelry worn close to your face all need to work well together.

Do consider hair extensions to give yourself more options.

Do test you hairstyle in advance. Make a pre-wedding appointment so you’ll know what your hair will look like. You may even want to take some photos to show your bridal party to get their feedback.

Do wear your hair up if you want to focus on gown details around your neckline or draw attention to a spectacular necklace.

Do try to incorporate some texture into your hairstyle by using hair accessories, e.g., a simple freshwater-pearl headband or hair jewels.

Do wear a robe on your wedding day while working on your hair or applying your makeup and not something that needs to be removed over your head. Otherwise, you’ll disturb your hairdo.

Do consider long, soft, flowing curls or a relaxed, asymmetrical up-do, as both are very current.

Do keep hair products, styling tools, and a mirror nearby, both during the ceremony and the reception, so you can tough up your hairstyle periodically.

Don’t have any chemical processes done close to your wedding day. Schedule appointments at least a day in advance.

Don’t make any drastic hair color changes within a few months of your wedding.

Don’t get a haircut less than two weeks before your wedding day.

Don’t use hairspray after your veil is on your head! All hairsprays will yellow your veil.

Don’t use new hair products on your wedding day. You could have an allergic reaction.

Don’t be to concerned if your hairstyle relaxes a little at the reception, you’ll just look more playful.

Don’t choose a hairstyle that’s a stretch for your hair. Select wisely and you’ll be a picture perfect bride all day long.
